Just an idea.
I think I'm going to ask high-school kids what they think about all this and what ideas they have. Sometimes, I feel we leave them out of the conversation, and they actually have a lot of insight to offer; after all, they're participants. Applebee mentions a bit about how kids see the oddness of it all, but I would be interested in hearing more. Just an idea.

Angela,
I applaud you for thinking about ways you can get students more involved in the classroom conversation. I too feel when have silenced many voices. This change requires a complete change in the way you view the classroom experience.
is the conversation about language and literacy curriculum the same conversation makes up an ELA classroom?
Going out on a limb and answering subtext's question: "No." I think the conversation in an ELA classroom now is so limited by policy and testing that notions of portfolios or video, or even reality TV, have no way of entering the conversation to enrich it. Even if those conversations and the habits of mind students develop through them don't hurt test scores (and maybe even help) it is a tough if not impossible sell.
